EDUINO: Collectively Improving Education Through Co-Creation and Innovation

Overview

SmartUp conceptualized, designed, and led EDUINO, North Macedonia's largest collaborative digital education platform and community of educators. It launched in March 2020 when COVID-19 closed schools. Using a crowdsourcing and co-creation methodology, SmartUp mobilized teachers, preschool educators, parents, and institutions to build curriculum-aligned video lessons, webinars, an early childhood development platform, and a 2D science laboratory.

More than 2,000 educators volunteered to record over 4,700 video lessons in Macedonian and Albanian. Around 70 advisors from the Bureau for Development of Education verified them, and they were broadcast on national television to reach rural students. SmartUp also ran over 50 webinars with 70,000+ live viewers. The model earned a special mention in HundrED's Global Collection (2021), and SmartUp handed EDUINO's operation to the Bureau, its owner. The project was delivered with UNICEF MK and the British Embassy Skopje.

The challenge

COVID-19 closed schools and created an urgent need for digital learning materials aligned with the national curriculum, free for every student including those in rural areas.

Teachers and preschool educators needed practical training, digital skills, and a professional community to deliver online and blended learning, with few ways to connect across levels of education.

Early childhood educators and parents lacked a central library of free, verified, play-based activities for children aged 3–10 in both Macedonian and Albanian.

The education system lacked a sustainable national mechanism for collaborative development, quality assurance, and continuous improvement of digital educational resources.

Activities and methods

  1. Conceptualized, designed, and led the EDUINO collective portal, launched on 17 March 2020 under the guidance and ownership of the Bureau for Development of Education. SmartUp ran open calls for video lessons between March 2020 and June 2021, published online and sent directly to all schools. The portal grew into EDUINO Nastava (E-Classroom and E-Kindergarten) and the Early Childhood Development platform.
  2. Mobilized a nationwide community of 2,000+ educators to record over 4,700 short curriculum-aligned video lessons which were published on EDUINO Nastava. They cover pre-primary, primary, and secondary education, and more than 1,100 are in Albanian. The lessons were also broadcast 8,140 times on national television (MRTV) to reach students in rural areas.
  3. Established a two-step quality assurance process. The EDUINO team checked each video technically, and around 70 Bureau advisors verified its curriculum content.
  4. Delivered over 50 webinars with 70,000+ live viewers and 140,000+ YouTube views, rated 4.7/5 on average.
  5. Built the EDUINO Early Childhood Development platform. Created 1200 play-based activities, for children in kindergarten, at school, and at home, of which 638 were approved, illustrated, and published, and 270 were translated into Albanian. Three Gameathons drew 2,400+ entries from parents, kindergarten teachers, and school teachers.
  6. Established the EDUINO Ambassadors programme to recognize outstanding educators and strengthen peer mentoring, teacher networking, and the continuous development of new educational resources. 75 educators were selected, 12 of them Albanian-speaking. A two-day workshop in Ohrid produced a report and an educators' Manifesto, delivered to the Bureau and the Ministry of Education and Science.
  7. Developed the EDUINO 2D Science Laboratory, with 17 experiments in Macedonian and Albanian. Each includes step-by-step instructions, a laboratory diary, quiz questions, and links to video lessons. SmartUp also designed the model for a Science Learning Network and engaged science institutions, with the Macedonian Ecological Society leading it.
  8. Reached 30,000+ student users and 25,000+ teacher users, with 6.7 million video lesson views and 42.9 million YouTube impressions. SmartUp built a community mailing list of 23,000+ subscribers, and the model earned a special mention in HundrED's Global Collection (2021).

Impact and learning

EDUINO changed how educational content is made in North Macedonia. Educators became creators, reviewers, and innovators instead of passive users. More than 2,000 teachers recorded lessons voluntarily, and many built filming and presentation skills they now use in their own classrooms. This showed that crowdsourcing and co-creation can produce curriculum-aligned resources at national scale, with verification safeguards that kept quality high.

The ecosystem it built continued to serve education beyond the pandemic. Over 4,700 video lessons, 50 webinars, 638 published play-based activities, and a 2D science laboratory remain freely available, and 75 Ambassadors form a peer network of dedicated educators. Broadcasting lessons on national television and publishing them in Macedonian and Albanian extended access to students who had no reliable internet or learning materials at home.

EDUINO strengthened teachers' digital competencies, fostered professional collaboration, encouraged innovation in teaching practice, and expanded access to quality educational resources for learners regardless of their location or circumstances. The inclusion of early childhood learning resources, educational games, science laboratories, and continuous professional development contributed to a lasting shift toward more engaging, learner-centred, and technology-enabled education. The Bureau for Development of Education assumed ownership of the portal, ensuring its long-term sustainability and continued development as a national educational resource. The project's innovative co-creation methodology also received international recognition through inclusion in the HundrED Global Collection as one of the world's leading education innovations.
