Social Innovation – a new way of solving societal challenges @TEDxSeptmevriskaSesijaSalon
Out of 62 applicants we selected 35 participants for the first TEDxSeptemvriskaSesijaSalon event with the title “Social Innovation – a new way of solving societal challenges”. The room was full with a lot of happy faces willing to share information and facts and contribute for a social good.
At the event we defined the terms social innovation and social entrepreneurship, we discussed the international and domestic examples of activities undertaken in this field, in Macedonia and abroad for two different views, scientific and business or corporate aspect.
Klimentina Ilijevski is an executive director of the Association for Research, Communication and Development “Public” and main and responsible editor of street magazine “Face to Face” whose functioning is based on the principles of social entrepreneurship.
Aferdita Imeri Haxijaha is doctoral student at the European Centre for Peace and Development and the Masters in Public Policy at the University of Pittsburgh (USA) and co-founder of a regional laboratory for social innovation SIL, a graduate degree in gender issues including representation degree in international politics.
- How to solve a social problem: Rosanne Haggerty (Duration 18:31) 2013
The first video that we looked at was the Rosanne Haggerty’s. Rosan is the President and CEO of Community Solutions and founder of Common Ground Community. She is an internationally recognized leader in developing innovative strategies to address the problem of homeless people and strengthening communities. Rosan has redesigned Hotel Times Square, Building the National Register of Historic places and they managed to reduce the number of homeless by 87% in 20 blocks of neighborhoods and around. She has won many international awards, and in 2012 was honored with Jane Jacobs, Medal for New Ideas and Activism by the Rockefeller Foundation. In her speech, How to solve a social problem? that discusses the problem of the homeless in Los Angeles and New York and the way that his organization will try to solve this social problem in some of these cities.
- Toby Eccles: Invest in social change (duration: 10:11) 2013
The second video that we looked at was from Toby Eccles, founder of the organization Social Finance. As a Development Director, his focus is on encouraging new initiatives for organization development and innovation. Toby led the teams that developed the model called “Social Impact Bond” and which was first implemented in a prison in England. Toby has worked as Director of Research at ARC, an organization for children development programs in the United Kingdom, as well as in communities with high rates of HIV infection in Africa. In the corporate world Dawson has worked in corporate financing and construction of the next generation Internet business protocols. He has a degree in Mathematics from St. Edmund Hall in London. In his video Toby talking about the model “Social Impact Bond” which so far have shown great in terms of solving of social problems, primarily the problem of prisoners in England, in order to reduce the number of criminal activities, improving the lives of prisoners and reduce the economic impacts of crime.
“I like that there were discussions, there were people of different professions, different ages and different backgrounds together to discuss a topic that is important.
As the discussion lasted, I was drawing conclusions, that I believe will help me and the others a lot. ”
“Inspirational! I like to see this event in Macedonia that has super atmosphere where we discuss and contribute to create new productive ideas . I would love to see more TED events in Skopje like for an example TEDx youth. ”
I liked that there is TEDx Salon in Skopje. I like management, I like innovation and I want to help in solving social problems. I want social innovation and I like that I can listen and debate on the same subject in Skopje on this event!
