Workshop on service development for national parks (North Macedonia)

Overview

The workshop 'Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development of National Parks in the Republic of North Macedonia' was part of the project 'Digitalization of Governance as a Tool for Rejuvenating Democracy', which SmartUp ran with the Macedonian Chevening Alumni Association (MCAA).

Held in Mavrovo, it brought together 37 participants from national parks, municipalities, government bodies, development agencies and the private and civic sectors to discuss strategies for the sustainable development of North Macedonia's national parks. The Minister of Environment and Physical Planning, Mr Naser Nuredini, and British Ambassador Rachel Galloway also took part.

The challenge

National parks in North Macedonia face serious challenges in many areas. How can they take a more proactive approach to these challenges, and how can other sectors support them?

Activities and methods

We designed a two-day workshop to crowdsource ideas and turn them into project proposals.

On day one, participants defined challenges, brainstormed, developed and chose ideas, and engaged a wider group. On day two, a smaller group of national park representatives and development experts turned the chosen ideas into project outlines, ready to be developed further and used to secure funding.

Impact and learning

The workshop engaged 37 participants, who initially generated five ideas focused on alternative tourism, digitalisation, education and technology. These were refined into three project concepts, laying the foundation for future sustainable development initiatives in the parks.

It strengthened connections among stakeholders and promoted mutual understanding and collaboration. An exchange of good practice, particularly from Shar Planina National Park, helped define development priorities and strategies.

Using design thinking, participants explored challenges and generated practical solutions. The method gave useful insights to representatives of the IME Programme and the British Embassy, informing future programme development and partnerships for sustainable development in national parks.
