Extended Mentorship and Incubation for team AndroMeta - Global Winners of GenU Youth Challenge

Extended Mentorship and Incubation for team AndroMeta - Global Winners of GenU Youth Challenge

Overview

SmartUp delivered an extended incubation and mentorship programme for UNICEF MK, supporting Team AndroMeta — selected among the five global winners of the Generation Unlimited Youth Challenge — in developing SpeakOut, a mobile application offering children and young people affected by bullying a safe, anonymous space to share experiences, receive peer support, and connect with trained volunteers. SmartUp mentored the team in social innovation, entrepreneurship, product development, business planning, and communication, helping them apply their US$20,000 global seed funding toward a more mature, scalable solution.

SmartUp's coaching strengthened the team's entrepreneurial, leadership, and pitching capacities, including support through the team's participation in the global Generation Unlimited incubation programme in Cairo — extending SmartUp's role beyond the initial competition into building lasting capacity for the young innovators to scale their impact.

The challenge

Young social innovators often lacked the technical, entrepreneurial, and organisational support needed to transform promising ideas into sustainable and scalable solutions after innovation competitions.

Victims of bullying frequently faced barriers to seeking help due to fear, stigma, and the absence of confidential and youth-friendly reporting mechanisms.

Early-stage youth-led digital innovations required structured mentoring, product refinement, and strategic guidance to maximize their social impact and long-term sustainability.

There was a need to strengthen the entrepreneurial, leadership, and project management capacities of young innovators to prepare them for scaling their solutions internationally.

Activities and methods

1. Delivered an extended incubation and tailored mentorship programme supporting Team AndroMeta in further developing the SpeakOut mobile application following their global success.

2. Supported the refinement of the application's concept, functionality, communication strategy, and long-term development plan through expert mentoring and business development guidance.

3. Assisted the team in utilizing the US$20,000 global seed funding awarded through the Generation Unlimited Youth Challenge to further advance their solution.

4. Strengthened the team's entrepreneurial, leadership, product development, and pitching capacities through continuous coaching and international exposure, including participation in the global Generation Unlimited incubation programme in Cairo.

Impact and learning

The project demonstrated how targeted post-competition incubation can significantly increase the long-term potential of youth-led social innovations. Rather than ending support after the competition, SmartUp provided continuous mentoring that enabled Team AndroMeta to further develop both their solution and their entrepreneurial capacities, helping transform an innovative idea into a more mature digital product with greater potential for sustainability and impact.

By supporting the development of the SpeakOut mobile application, the project contributed to broader efforts to prevent bullying and promote youth mental wellbeing by creating a safe, anonymous digital environment where young people could seek help, share experiences, and support one another. The initiative also demonstrated the value of investing in young innovators beyond the ideation stage, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and practical experience needed to become future social entrepreneurs and changemakers.
